The nation of Uganda on the 23rd of January awoke to the saddening news of the death of one of its greatest economists – Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, who was also Governor- Bank of Uganda. The governor died at Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted after collapsing due to complications related to diabetes. The announcement of his death was made by Deputy governor- Michael Atingi-Ego.

Professor Mutebile had been reportedly in and out of hospital in Uganda and India with diabetic related sicknesses that led to kidney failure.

Mutebile went to Kigezi College Butobere and Makerere College School Kampala. He after joined Makerere University  in 1971 where he was guild president. He however went to Durham university in England to complete his undergraduate studies after fleeing Uganda on making harsh attacks on the then government decision to expel Asians.

The late governor will be remembered for multiple economic introductions like; monetary policy, inflation targeting: various tough stands like; speaking against Uganda’s high appetite for debt which crippled the development of cryptocurrency. For spearheading many economic reform programs in the 1970’s and 1980’s which were a restoration to the country’s economy undeniably.

Among many office appointments and various service the governor has rendered this country and the world at large, we will all remember his unwavering service as the Governor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Uganda from 2001 to his death, where he was recently appointed for a new term of office since 2021.

Even as the burial arrangements unfold, the witty BOU Chief Executive and tough economist will be greatly missed!
