The Makerere University Students’ Guild under the leadership of Shamim Nambassa disagreed with the University VC on the mode of administering lectures. The University had insisted on the usage of online studies even with the full opening of universities to physical study.
The Students’ Guild suggested earlier on that the University be opened to all the students come February 5 and in action ordered all students to come back whether the university agrees or not.
A strike by the university students followed through on Monday 7- Tuesday 8 with reason for protest being, the unending online studies. The students including their tuition also pay a fee labeled as, functional fee. This is meant to cater for; Wi-Fi, library, hospital and sports among others. The students despite studying online have had to continually pay the fee which would leave one rather confused. Like other universities are open to physical school including some colleges in Makerere University, the students protested that the university be fully open for physical study and access by its students for all colleges.
Amidst suspending 12 students for allegedly being involved in unlawful protest, one Richard Ssebuganda, also known as Sebzo -a medical student lost his arm after a canister was thrown into his room during this very strike.
The University Guild and the general public insist an investigation be carried out to settle the injustice. It is believed that Sebzo was not involved in the strike as he kept in his room minding his own business in Lumumba hall, a facility inside the University.
