Thursday 14th July,2022 will be a date hard for any Makererean or even a Ugandan present at the time to forget, forever it will be lined at the forefront of our memories.

For over 20 years, the Ugandan government had banned partisan politics following tensions it had brought to the country, In 2005 however, multi-party politics returned to Uganda and that included in higher institutions of learning.

Not that the University hasn’t had cases of life loss or terrible injuries including losing body parts during guild campaigns and strikes but the form of occurrence for this case is what attracts attention more.

The former cases have been caused by security personnel trying to keep the students at bay unlike the latter where it is said a student killed another student.

Makerere University had been holding its Guild president campaigns for weeks and close to a day to the 88th Guild polls, a student was allegedly stubbed to death during a brawl between NUP(National Unity Platform) and FDC( Forum for Democratic Change) supporters.

Micheal Bewatti Betuungura a 25 year old UCU (Kampala campus) second year law student lost his life. The deceased is said to have been a staunch FDC supporter who went to the University to gunner votes for his friend and old boy – Justus Tukamushaba the FDC flag bearer for guild at Makerere University.

“Gallant Makerereans. #JUST US (an adulteration of the first name of the FDC Guild presidential candidate). We’re hosting a rally at the Rugby Grounds today, we shall set off from Northcorte (Nsibirwa Hall) @3pm. Wear your blue and come on (sic) out to support your next 88th guild president,” read one of his last status updates.

ASP Luke Oweyesigire – Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson said, “The Police were informed and upon reaching the scene we found blood stains believed to be for the deceased inside Nsibirwa Hall where he hid there after the scuffle that led to his stabbing.”

Betuungura died at the Makerere University hospital where he was rushed at as he bled profusely.

On July 16th, Saturday, he was put to rest at his ancestral home in Malere village Kamwenge district. His father, Mr. Benson Mucunguzi asked that government ban multi-party politics in learning institutions as he addressed other mourners.

He also emphasized that his son wanted to become a lawyer to help the underprivileged. “After he rejected other course alternatives, I had to look for money to pay his fees. I have lost a loving and focused son,” he said.

In regard to the incident, three have been arrested and detained including Hon. Kabuye Frank  , Kasanda South MP, Allan Sekidde and a student of Makerere only known by Muzafaluh.
