Leaders in Karamoja report that about 900 people have died in Karamoja due to hunger and hunger related diseases since the beginning of the year (2022). Karamoja is the north-eastern pastoral region of Uganda.
Being hit by a heavy drought, the food fields have all been scorched by the sun leaving nothing to harvest and the granaries empty with nothing to store.
Reports show that 8 in 10 households in Karamoja have either limited or no food at all leaving many children malnourished and the elderly crawling to their death before their time.
The region has been hit so hard that there is no food for both humans and animals causing scarcity of meat and milk – a basic in Karamoja, making the situation even worse.
Waiting on government is the hope everyday with the most at risk being those affected by HIV and tuberculosis. these take heavy drugs with no or limited food.
Leaders in Karamoja have however reported that; Kotido, Kaabong, Moroto, , Napak and Amudat have begun to receive food relief.
