The MTN Marathon was launched on the 20th October, 2022 under the theme, “Run for Babies”. The proceeds are to go toward the upgrading of the maternal newborn services in four selected health facilities in several parts of Uganda.

Health facilities to benefit from the run include; Kaabong Health Center 111 in Karamoja, Kachumbala Health Center 111 in Teso region, Kisenyi Health Center 111 and Kawaala Health Center 111 in the Kampala region.

The marathon has returned after a two year break induced by the Covid-19 restrictions at the time. Its return has marked a major event success as its attendance was marked by high profile people including the Prime minister -Robinah Nabbanja who flagged off the runners.

Government has been accused however of double standards in its fight against the Ebola spread after the MTN Marathon which held more than 20,000 people was authorized and happened on 20th November, 2022 at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

One concerned citizen(Mr. Jeje Odea)  tweeted; “Schools are closing two weeks earlier because of Ebola, yet adults are converging in thousands to sweat, one of the easiest ways of spreading the disease. How do you convince one that the Ebola card is not a gig to attract international sympathy and hence foreign donations.”
