Uganda Mourns Justice Aweri – Flags at Half Mast.

Justice Rubby Opio Aweri is the first Judge to die in office since the administration of the Judiciary Act was passed 3 years ago. The 69 year old judge succumbed to a stroke on Wednesday after being sick for a while.

Uganda will give Justice Aweri a 5 day mourning and flags will fly at half masts in honor of his service and to administer the Judiciary Act.

The government has pledged to take care of all burial expenses in statements read by both prime minister Nabbanja and the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs on behalf of prime minister Nabbanja.

“Accordingly, HE Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in line with the Administration of the Judiciary Act 2020, Section 23, Schedule 3; has directed that the late Hon. Mr. Justice Rubby Opio Aweri be accorded a state funeral with all expenses met by government; flags shall fly at half-mast,” Ms. Nabbanja said in the statement.

Justice Aweri joined the judiciary in 1983 as a Grade one Magistrate. He rose through ranks to the position of Justice in the supreme court.

 

Justice Aweri’s  Burial Program is as Follows;

Monday 12th DEC, 2022: Special Supreme Court session at 10am
at the Judiciary headquarters.

Tuesday: Funeral service at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero-Kampala at 10am. The cortege will thereafter depart for a session in Parliament and thereafter, the body will lie in State.

Wednesday: At 7am, the body will leave Kampala for Lira City.
At 1pm, there will be a Joint district council sitting at Lira City Council Hall.
At 6pm, there will be a vigil at his residence in Senior Quarters, Lira City.

Thursday: At 10am, there will be a funeral service at St Augustine Church Barogole, Lira. Thereafter the body will be taken to Dokolo District for an overnight vigil.

Friday: At 10am, there will be a funeral service before burial at at Kachung Western Ward, Agwata Town Council in Dokolo. Thereafter, he will be laid to rest.
