Uganda has received backlash from around the world including major donors like the US after assenting the anti-homosexuality Act which is viewed as an infringe on ‘human rights’. There have been threats on medical support especially for people living with HIV in the country.
All these begun after the president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni executed his constitutional mandate as prescribed by Article 91(3)(a) of the constitution, he assented the anti-homosexuality Act which speaker of parliament, Hon. Anita Among confirmed in a statement on twitter.
Global Fund , UNAIDS and PEPFAR leaders have suggested that Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 is a grave jeopardy on Uganda’s progress on its HIV response. These leaders say the Act will obstruct health education and the outreach that can help end AIDS as a public health threat. “The stigma and discrimination associated with the passage of the Act has already led to reduced
access to prevention as well as treatment services,”they said.
Winnie Byanyima – Executive Director of UNAIDS and an UnderSecretary General of the united nations.
Medics in Uganda on hearing this, strongly objected the assertions by donors, ” Healthcare is for everyone regardless of who you are. We even look after those who are on death row. Our work is a calling; it is not about feeling and interest”, Dr. Daniel Kabayinze – Head of Public Health Affairs at ministry of Heath.
“One of the things they’re (donors) threatening is to kill our 1.2 million people who have been surviving on PEPFAR funds to buy drugs for HIV/Aids, so that we don’t buy the drugs for our people and they die. This is a simple matter which we can fight but parasites can’t fight. If you fear to sacrifice, you cannot fight. In order for you to fight, I want to first cure you of parasitism. Europe is lost and they also want us to be lost. Those who want an easy life will end up being prostitutes. – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The managers of PEPFAR program recently however warned that the country risks losing the $400m(shs 1.4 trillion) support to millions of people living with HIV/AIDS.
