Mpondwe Lhubiriha Secondary school located in Kasese district nearing the boarder of Uganda and DRC suffered a brutal attack on Friday night where many of its students were; hacked, shot and burned to death, it is important to note that the bodies burned some beyond recognition.
It is officially reported that a total of 6 people were kidnapped, 41 people were killed, 38 being students, over a dozen badly injured, in under two hours on Friday night in the school and the near village of Bwera where houses were also reported to have been burned to ashes.
The terrorist attack is suspected to have been carried out by the ADF rebels yet the motive of the night raid still remains unclear to the government.
Many students in the dormitories, seeing their colleagues die and blood spilled over lifeless bodies, smeared their bodies with fresh blood so as to be counted dead by the terrorists.
One student Godwin Mumbere recounts, “…after successfully hiding in the dormitory, I had to smear myself with blood from my colleague. When they returned to check on us, they thought I was dead and that is how I survived.”
Residents of Bwera, parents, guardians and many relations of those attacked especially the students gathered at a mortuary in Bwera General Hospital, Kasese on Sunday to identify their loved ones.
This attack will be remembered as the deadliest Uganda has had to face since 2010 when 76 people were killed in the twin bombings in Kampala by the Al-Shabab rebel group.
Many have come out to condemn the act, the UN calling it, “an appalling act”, the US and the AU also condemned the brutality.
The president has promised to track down “those evil people” and cause them to “pay for what they have done”. The Military have also vowed to track down the attackers and would free those kidnapped.
