As South Sudan People’s independence day draws near, the country’s government confirms pursuit for the first ever elections since their independence in July,2011 after many years of civil wars.
President Salva Kiir on Tuesday said that the elections are set for next year, 2024. He also announced that he will be running for presidency.
The government has however for a long time failed to meet key provisions of the agreement signed at independence like drafting a constitution which worries many stakeholders, political analysts suggesting the youngest country may not be ready for 2024.
“I welcome the endorsement to run for presidency in 202”, Salva Kiir – Sudan People’s Liberation Movement(SPLM) Party.
No other candidate has yet declared their interest with many country men speculating long time rival Machar to stand for presidency in the forth coming elections.
The 71 year old South Sudan President, has been the only president of South Sudan since 9th July, 2011, at the independence.
