President Museveni has given directive to the Ministry of Public Service to raise the pay for science head teachers. The Ministry has been asked to increase the pay for secondary school head teachers and deputies that specialize in sciences.

This comes after the president says he received a letter through the ministry of Education with a complaint from head teachers and deputies of secondary schools that specialize in sciences reasoning that their salary was not increased after that of science teachers was, an act president Museveni called, “completely irrational”.

“Once a science teacher, always a science teacher. They should be paid as such until the government has enough funds to pay all teachers well, and then we can revisit the ranks of head teacher”, President Museveni.

The school heads who petitioned government stated that they were having a hard time leading staff who were earning twice as much as they were.

From 2017, the efforts to increase pay for science teachers were underway but only implemented in 2021. Teachers of sciences on graduate and Grade V level earning from 1.1m and 796,000shs to 4m and 3m respectively.

“I pray that this is implemented because president Museveni stated he would address one issue and then move to the others. Since he is finalizing the salaries for science teachers, we are waiting for him to address the arts teachers next,” Mr. Mugabo Augustine – Chairperson of the Head teachers Association in Uganda.

The story of the arts teachers still remains untold, while increases happen all around science teachers, the president’s words are to be held in hope, “address one issue and then move to the others”.
