In honor of her mother, the doctors have named the newborn Raneem, as no other relatives have been found to provide a name. Dr al-Farra also highlighted the severe electricity scarcity at the hospital, expressing concern that if the power supply to the incubators and ventilators is depleted, it could lead to the loss of all the infants in the facility. “In case the power needed to operate the incubators and ventilators of this unit is stopped, this means that a death certificate will be written for all infants here,” he explained.

The United Nations issued a warning on Sunday, stating that the lives of over 120 newborn babies in incubators in Gaza’s hospitals are at immediate risk due to the fuel shortage caused by the renewed Israeli blockade following the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel. Israel started its recent air campaign following the large-scale attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas just over two weeks ago.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said Hamas locations and infrastructure in Gaza would be targeted, while Tel Aviv also announced a ‘complete siege’ of the region. At the time of publication, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that over 6,537 people had been killed in the recent fighting, while the Israeli side reported a death toll of over 1,400.
