A catastrophic landslide at a rubbish dump in Kampala, Uganda, has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, including five children. The disaster has left a trail of destruction, with over 100 houses buried under debris and around 1,000 residents forced to evacuate their homes.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the chances of finding survivors are dwindling. Red Cross teams are on the ground, providing humanitarian aid and support to those affected. However, the situation remains dire, with many families losing loved ones and struggling to access basic necessities.

Eyewitnesses describe the horror of the landslide, with one survivor, Nanyonga Prossy, pleading for help: “We need help, we are badly off, we don’t have a place to sleep.”

Government officials are calling for urgent funding to resettle locals and provide support to those affected. President Yoweri Museveni has announced compensation for victims’ relatives and injured persons, but more needs to be done to address the scale of the disaster.

The people of Kampala are in dire need of assistance. Let’s come together to support them in this difficult time.
