Muhammad Ssegirinya, also known as “mr. update”, the member of parliament for Kawempe Division North, passed away on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. His death was met with an outpouring of tributes from fellow lawmakers and constituents, who remembered him as a passionate advocate for social justice and human rights.

Ssegirinya’s health had been declining for some time, and he had been in and out of hospital receiving treatment for complications related to HIV/AIDS. Despite his poor health, Ssegirinya remained committed to his work as a parliamentarian, and his death has been seen as a significant loss for the people of Uganda.

The circumstances surrounding Ssegirinya’s death have also raised concerns about the treatment of prisoners and the need for greater respect for the rule of law in Uganda. Ssegirinya had been arrested and detained on several occasions, and his family and supporters have alleged that his health suffered as a result of his imprisonment.
