The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has unveiled the Rwenzori Tourism Destination Management Plan (TDMP), a landmark initiative aimed at positioning the Rwenzori region as a competitive, sustainable, and inclusive tourism hub. The launch was announced at a media briefing held at UTB’s head offices in Kampala, Lugogo House.
Addressing the press, UTB Chief Executive Officer Ms Juliana Kagwa described the Rwenzori Mountains—famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon”—as one of Uganda’s most unique treasures, offering snow-capped peaks, diverse wildlife, and a rich cultural heritage. She noted that the TDMP will provide a structured framework to harness these assets, enhance visitor experiences, and ensure that local communities benefit directly from tourism development.

“The Destination Management Plan is not just about increasing tourist numbers; it is about creating meaningful, sustainable growth that preserves the Rwenzori’s uniqueness while uplifting local livelihoods,” Kagwa emphasized.

Stakeholders from the public and private sectors expressed strong support for the initiative. Kasese-based tourism operator Kiiza Alex welcomed the plan, noting that it addresses long-standing challenges such as poor infrastructure, limited promotion, and weak coordination among stakeholders. “This is a timely intervention. We are ready to play our part in ensuring tourism growth benefits our communities,” he said.
On behalf of the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), Country Lead Martijn Harlaar highlighted the organization’s role in supporting capacity development, product diversification, and expanding market access. He underscored that the TDMP is aligned with global best practices and provides a roadmap for unlocking the region’s potential in ecotourism, adventure travel, and community-based tourism.

The launch generated strong media interest, with journalists probing how the TDMP will enhance accessibility, service quality, and visitor safety. Stakeholders assured the public that the plan is designed to deliver practical solutions while building a globally recognized brand for the Rwenzori region.
