A Ugandan court has released on bail a ruling party parliamentary candidate accused of assaulting Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

Onesmas Twinamasiko, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Bugangaizi East in Kakumiro district, had been in custody for more than a week before Wednesday’s ruling by the Kibaale Chief Magistrate’s Court.

The case stems from a confrontation on 17 July, during the announcement of NRM primary election results at the party’s Kakumiro offices. Prosecutors say a scuffle broke out and that Mr Twinamasiko struck the prime minister in full view of supporters and security officials.

He was arrested on 3 September and charged the same day with assault and causing bodily harm. Although he pleaded not guilty and sought bail, the court initially remanded him until a decision on his application.

Magistrate Nazifah Namayanja granted his release on a non-cash bond of 500,000 shillings ($130; £100), supported by three sureties, including Kakumiro district leaders.

Mr Twinamasiko is due back in court on 2 October. Speaking after his release, he described the charges as politically motivated and thanked supporters for their backing.

The decision drew mixed reactions in Kakumiro. Bugangaizi South MP Josephat Tumwesige welcomed the ruling, calling bail a constitutional right, while district chairperson Joseph Sentayi Senkusu urged President Yoweri Museveni to step in and address deepening rifts within the local NRM leadership.

The case has already sparked tensions in the area. On 4 September, police clashed with demonstrators in Kisiita town who had taken to the streets demanding Mr Twinamasiko’s release. Protesters, including women and young people, were dispersed after running battles with security forces.
