Kenyan President William Ruto announced a state-sponsored healthcare programme that will grant over two million vulnerable residents free access to medical care and health insurance.

Today, we are making a bold statement as a nation that we do not want any Kenyan to be left behind. We want to move together, and we want to make it so that health is not a privilege for the people who have the means and the money and the ability to pay; that health is a right for every citizen,” he said in Nairobi on Friday.

The Kenyan president proclaimed the plan would promote fairness by ensuring all Kenyans receive equal access to healthcare. “Now the insurance you get today is the same as the insurance all other Kenyans have. That is the equality we are looking for,” he stressed.

The initiative was launched under the SHA (Social Health Authority) Sponsorship Programme and will provide free medical care to 2.2 million citizens and 558,000 households.

The government has allocated 30 million USD (25.5 million EUR) for the scheme, which will cover services such as outpatient appointments, inpatient treatment, maternity services, mental health support, and dental care.
