Donald Trump’s Air Force One touched down in Tel Aviv today, as the hostage–prisoner exchange phase of his Gaza peace plan got underway.
The first stage of the deal, reached between Israel and Hamas last week, includes a ceasefire, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the Israeli military’s withdrawal to the “yellow line” in Gaza. Later phases will address Gaza’s governance, the future of Hamas, and the reconstruction of the enclave.
According to officials, 20 living hostages are set to be handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross on Monday before being transferred to the Re’im military base in Israel. At the time of reporting, seven had already crossed into Israel.
The bodies of 28 deceased hostages will also be returned, while around 1,700 Palestinians detained in Gaza since October 2023, along with 250 serving life sentences, will be released under the deal.
Trump is in Israel to address the Knesset, meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and families of hostages, before flying to Egypt for the official signing of the peace agreement.
