FUFA Executive Committee Suspends New Format of 2025/2026 Uganda Premier League Season

In a significant development, the FUFA Executive Committee has announced the suspension of the new format for the 2025/2026 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season. This decision comes after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including UPL clubs, league sponsors, and the Uganda Premier League Board.

According to Hon. Moses Magogo, the FUFA Executive Committee’s decision to suspend the new format is aimed at allowing stakeholders more time to understand the proposed reforms through various forms of sensitization. “These reforms have not only affected the top (male) division league but all FUFA Competitions,” he explained.

The new format was introduced with the objectives of increasing competition, reducing the potential for match-fixing, creating a commercial good, and making the football environment more interesting. While there has been some positivity surrounding the new format, the clubs and sponsors have expressed concerns.

Reverting to the Double-Round Robin Format

Following consultations with the clubs and sponsors, it has been agreed that the league will continue on a double-round robin format for the 2025/2026 season. This decision is seen as a step back to a tried and tested format, which has been used in lower league competitions.

“We have listened to the clubs, our sponsors, the general public, and the fans,” Hon. Magogo said. “Football is all about the fans, and we ought to listen to them.” The FUFA Executive Committee’s decision to suspend the new format and revert to the double-round robin format demonstrates their commitment to listening to stakeholders and adapting to their needs.

Implications of the Decision

The suspension of the new format has significant implications for the Uganda Premier League. It remains to be seen how this decision will affect the league’s competitiveness and commercial viability. However, the FUFA Executive Committee’s commitment to stakeholder engagement and fan satisfaction is a positive step towards ensuring the long-term success of Ugandan football.

As the Uganda Premier League continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the FUFA Executive Committee’s decision impacts the league’s future development. One thing is certain, however: the league’s stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that their interests are represented
