{"id":214,"date":"2025-09-15T07:11:32","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T07:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/?p=214"},"modified":"2025-09-15T07:11:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T07:11:33","slug":"remebering-ugandas-greatest-magid-musisi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/2025\/09\/15\/remebering-ugandas-greatest-magid-musisi\/","title":{"rendered":"Remebering Uganda&#8217;s greatest Magid Musisi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On This Day: Remembering Uganda\u2019s Greatest, Magid Musisi at 58<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 15, 1967, a football gem was born in Kampala, Magid Musisi, the man who would go on to etch his name as Uganda\u2019s most celebrated footballer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he would be celebrating his 58th birthday, and though he departed this world in December 2005, his legacy still roars like a lion in Ugandan football folklore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born to Siraje Katende and Deborah Namutebi, Musisi\u2019s story began in the dusty playgrounds of Mulago, nicknamed \u2018Maracana\u2019 after Brazil\u2019s iconic stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was here, alongside childhood peers like Adam Semugabi and Rajab Sekalye, that a powerful, stocky, and lightning-fast youngster began shaping into a phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 16, he had abandoned school to chase his football dream, and Pepsi FC snapped him up in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just two years later, SC Villa\u2019s legendary coach David Otti ushered him into the big stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mu.jpg 534w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mu-203x300.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A defining moment came in August 1985 when Musisi stunned rivals Express with two quick goals inside four minutes, a spark that lit the fire of a goal-scoring machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magidu Musisi (left) along with Hussein Mbalangu at SC Villa<br>From there, Musisi became Villa\u2019s spearhead, delivering league and cup doubles, Cecafa Club triumphs, and a record 28-goal season that crowned him Uganda\u2019s top scorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His exploits inevitably caught the national team\u2019s eye. Wearing the Cranes jersey, Musisi struck alongside Phillip Omondi, famously dismantling Mozambique in the 1988 Olympic qualifiers with a brace in each leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1993 UgandaCranes<br>Stars: Magidu Musisi (Capt), Robert Mukiibi, Jackson Mayanja, Iddi Batambuze, Mubiru Tabliq, Robert Aloro, Mike Mukasa, Adam Semugabi, Charles Temaligwe, Issa Sewanyana, Fred Tamale, Sula Kato, Rajab Sekalye, Shaban Yasin, Sadiq Wassa, George Ssemogerere.<br>In France, he donned the Stade Rennais jersey, becoming a cult hero before sealing a record-breaking $1 million move to Turkish giants Bursaspor in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ik-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ik-1.jpg 680w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ik-1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>1993 Uganda cranes team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, he didn\u2019t just score goals, he created history, introducing the famous \u2018crocodile walk\u2019 celebration that Bursaspor fans still treasure today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, he featured for \u00c7anakkale Dardanelspor and even Vietnam\u2019s \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng, carrying Uganda\u2019s flag across continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His international journey was sprinkled with both brilliance and controversy, captaining the Uganda Cranes, hitting a memorable hat-trick against Rwanda in 1998, but also clashing with coaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Musisi remained larger than life, an unshakable symbol of Ugandan football\u2019s golden spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Away from the pitch, Musisi was a father of seven, a man whose battles extended beyond defenders to personal struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a long illness, he passed on December 13, 2005, at his mother\u2019s home in Bwaise, before being laid to rest in Bukasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"571\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/miu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/miu.jpg 571w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/miu-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet every September 15, his story refuses to fade.
