In a world often marked by competition and comparison<\/strong>, Pastor Daniel Donald Mukuye brought a timely reminder during Sunday\u2019s service at Full Gospel Church Makerere \u2014 that love and benevolence are the antidotes to envy. Preaching from 1 Corinthians 13, Pastor Mukuye built upon earlier sermons delivered by Pastor Fred Wantante on the subject of envy, urging believers to go beyond recognising envy\u2019s dangers to actively living out its cure. \u201cIf you embrace love and benevolence,\u201d he said, \u201cenvy will lose its grip on your life. Love for your neighbour is both a command and a vaccine against jealousy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Continuation of a Timely Word<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The message followed a recent series addressing the \u201cjealous God\u201d and the corrosive effects of envy. Pastor Mukuye explained that while envy is almost universal \u2014 likening it to a cold or flu everyone catches at some point \u2014 it can be overcome through two \u201cdoses\u201d: love and benevolence. He defined love as \u201clooking at another person and seeing yourself in them\u201d and benevolence as \u201cdesiring good for others.\u201d Drawing from his father\u2019s words at his graduation \u2014 \u201cOur children must be better than us\u201d \u2014 he highlighted the selfless joy in wanting others to excel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gifts Meant to Complement, Not Compete<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Using 1 Corinthians 12 as a foundation, Pastor Mukuye reminded the congregation that God Himself distributes different gifts according to His will. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers \u2014 each role is necessary and none is superior. \u201cYour gift is nothing without love,\u201d he said, warning against pride and competition within the body of Christ. He illustrated how, in the early church, evangelists, apostles, and prophets worked together to spread the gospel, plant churches, and ground believers in truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lessons from Jonathan and David<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A key example came from the friendship between Jonathan and David (1 Samuel 18\u201323). Although Jonathan was heir to the throne, he celebrated David\u2019s victories and even protected him from King Saul\u2019s wrath. Jonathan, Pastor Mukuye noted, understood that \u201cthere is enough room for all of us to thrive.\u201d He saw David\u2019s success as his own and refused to let ambition destroy their bond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rejecting the Cain-Abel Spirit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Referencing the rivalry between Cain and Abel, Pastor Mukuye cautioned against the mindset that another\u2019s success means your loss. \u201cYour neighbour\u2019s acceptance does not mean your rejection,\u201d he said. \u201cGod has ample space for all of us \u2014 both in Heaven and here on Earth.\u201d He urged believers to focus on their God-given assignments rather than fight for positions or recognition, pointing to Jesus\u2019 assurance in John 14:2 that there are \u201cmany rooms\u201d in His Father\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practical Expressions of Love<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Pastor Mukuye challenged the congregation to demonstrate love in tangible ways \u2014 visiting those they haven\u2019t seen in a while, giving gifts, praying for others\u2019 prosperity, and even blessing those who have wronged them. Quoting 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, he reminded believers that love is patient, kind, and never envious. \u201cTrue love,\u201d he concluded, \u201covercomes pride, selfishness, and anger. It never fails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Call to Action<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Closing his message, Pastor Mukuye invited everyone to reflect on their relationships: Is there someone I\u2019ve refused to forgive? Have I withheld good from someone out of jealousy or resentment? \u201cDeclare love for your neighbour and pray for them,\u201d he urged. \u201cPray for their establishment in faith and for their success. In doing so, you fulfil the law of Christ and reveal to the world that you are His disciple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
