When the demands were rejected, violence escalated both inside prisons and across parts of the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents expressed shock at the scale of the violence. <em>\u201cIt is very regrettable how Guatemala City has woken up,\u201d<\/em> said local resident <strong>Carlos Lopez<\/strong>. Another resident, <strong>Manuel Garcia<\/strong>, described the attacks as retaliation by gangs angered by the government\u2019s refusal to grant privileges to imprisoned leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda<\/strong>, armed attacks were reported across several areas of the <strong>Guatemala City metropolitan region<\/strong>, leaving <strong>at least seven police officers dead and ten others injured<\/strong>. The violence extended beyond prison facilities, marking one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gugudde.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2.jpg 1182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, the government <strong>reinforced security deployments on major roads<\/strong>, tightened patrols in affected areas, and <strong>suspended classes nationwide<\/strong> as a precautionary measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Villeda condemned the attacks as a <em>\u201ccowardly response\u201d<\/em> by criminal groups to state action, stressing that the government <strong>will not negotiate with gangs or grant them special treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barrio 18 and MS-13 have long been in conflict with the Guatemalan state and are involved in crimes including <strong>extortion, contract killings, and drug trafficking<\/strong>.
