Ms. Shamim Nambassa, the 87th Makerere University guild elect has cautioned the University VC Nawangwe on the effect of blended learning, a system the university picked to teach their students during COVID-19 lockdown and has since then continued to practice the same even after the president fully re-opening the country.

The president of the Republic of Uganda in August 2021 gave directive to fully open learning institutions on 2nd November. Makerere University however unlike other learning institutions that responded to this, did not open fully.

The administration of the University gave a report that only 20% of the students were as yet vaccinated and thus caused a threat of infecting and a breakout of COVID 19 in the university which would be more trouble than blended learning.

During a press conference held by the 87th guild at Lumumba hall on 30th Jan, 2022, the student’s guild president however insisted that as per the survey done by the student guild body – most university students are vaccinated leaving many confused of whether to trust the guild body or university Vice chancellor.

After failed negotiations with the university administration on the full reopening of the university, the guild has called all students to return to the campus on 05th Feb, 2022 for physical learning whether its officially opened or not.  Ms. Nambassa Shamim believes that , ‘illiteracy can not treat Covid’.

The Makerere university guild president denies the strike rumors even as many people anticipated Monday 31st January to be that day, Shamim says, there is no planned strike and if there be a strike, it will ‘pour like rain’.
