Just a few weeks after the African presidents returned from Europe at the EU-AU summit where they were promised equal partnerships, Africans in Ukraine which turned a war zone over night are facing discrimination at the boarder trying to get to the Polish boarder in their endeavors to return home.

Among the hundreds of thousands fleeing Ukraine, are Africans especially students. Most African students go to Ukraine to study Medicine, pharmacy and engineering. In the wake of Russian attack on Ukraine however, many are trying to travel back home for safety which way out seems to be impossible or at least delayed by racism.

“Only Ukrainians, if you are black you should walk” are the words a Nigerian student Jessica, records the authorities at bus and train stops say to the Africans as they try to board to the boarder for safety like others.

Other students report that they have been denied right to bus, they instead have been left to stand all night in the cold without food -many have had to walk 8 hours to the boarder seeking refuge.

Sad cases have been reported of Ukrainians choosing animals over the black humans on bus.

Egyptians and Arabs have also been reported to struggle and suffer racism in their quest to leave the country as the adapted order is, first Ukrainian children, second women and third white men.

Romania has however been reported as a true hub for Africans. The Africans that found refuge in Romania report that they have been treated well; given free food, shelter and water.

The African Union discloses its disturbance by all these reports #AfricansinUkraine being refused the right to cross the boarder to safety stressing that this treatment “would be shockingly racist” and in breach of international law.

Many Africans, Arabs, Latinos and other races at large condemn the act while some are bitter and acknowledge that even when the white race claims racism is in the past, this war displayed the depth of racism even after ages.

This has caused some to blame African leaders for paralyzing the education system in Africa which makes many young people to go overseas to study and hence face this harsh treatment for being black.
