Floods have cut out on Lyantonde district , submerging crops and leaving many families up to about 30 in Kyemamba trading center, homeless. The issue has caused many in the region to anticipate food shortage outbreak to cover the region due to the flood. “My people are homeless now. Some sleep on verandas, others are at my home yet they don’t even have what to eat,” Mr. James Baguma, the chairperson of Kyemamba Village.
The floods caused by the heavy rains which have been reported to pour for the past couple of weeks have left many roads damaged cutting Lyantonde district from many neighboring districts like Lwengo and Ssembabule.
A section of Lwengo-Lyantonde-Ssembabule Road via Kyemamba road was submerged after a dam at Kyemamba in Lyakajura sub county, burst in banks following heavy rain.
Truck drivers have reported to be stranded for days with cattle and produce including the perishables like tomatoes, onions among others. Many residents in Lyantonde district have no food or where to sleep and only have their hope in the government.
Mr. Fred Muhangi ,the district chairperson blamed the issue on the residents whom he says encroached the wetlands “Our people failed to take heed and went ahead to settle in wetlands. Nature is now fighting back and they are facing the repercussions,” he said.
