The Lango region NRM(National Resistance Movement) youth are trekking to Kampala for the president’s 79th birthday celebration due to be held on Friday. They said that the youth from the region have many times missed the occasion hence their action to be part.
“This time we are going to make it extraordinary to walk to show love and solidarity as the youth of Uganda and everyday intend to cover 79 kilometers according to the age of our president,” Geoffrey Okwi – mobilizer.
The Birthday celebrations however changed to celebrate the historic deadly Katonga battle that led to the liberation of the country. The celebrations have been tagged “the Katonga spirit”, set to attract NRA veterans who participated in the Katonga battle, a deadly battle that closed out western Uganda out from the rest of the country. Museveni and Saleh are some of the veterans to be celebrated at the fete.
Many have however called the move of the Lango youth one set to attract the president’s eye on them for a heavy facilitation from His Excellency. On hearing this, their chairperson said, ” Those are their words, but we want to show solidarity to the president because we still have that love for him”.
The youth were flagged off on Sunday by Bishop Tom Ibrahim Okello. They said they will walk over 300k within 3 days to participate in the celebrations which will be held at the Kololo ceremonial grounds in Kampala.
Lango youth said they picked money from their own pockets and well wishers for the journey to the celebrations. They are 30 but hope to be joined by others as they journey.
