67 year old Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been elected as new Somalian president, on Sunday 15th in an election delayed for over a year. Hassan was president of Somalia in the term 2012-2017.

Law makers voted Hassan with 214 votes which defeated incumbent president Mohammad Farmajo with 110 votes.

The elections which were 15 months behind of the earlier planned time, were delayed due to insecurities in the country, severe draught, Covid-19 pandemic and differences among leaders.

The elections were held under tight security after receiving threats from the Al-Shabab who have wanted to overtake the government.

President Hassan was sworn in immediately on winning.

Farmajo who was seeking a third term in office has conceded  defeat.
