On Sunday morning, horrifying news covered the waves of Uganda with the death of the speaker of parliament, Rt.Hon. Jacob Oulanyah.
With sound mourning especially from parliament for the loss of their colleague and boss, rumors of who would be the new speaker begun to spread. A mourning notion many Ugandans couldn’t understand.
Ugandans were made to understand thereafter that as a country, we couldn’t send off the speaker without an elected speaker in office. The plenary sitting had to be chaired by a speaker.
Central Executive Committee of the NRM (CEC) in charge of election for the ruling party under the leadership of Dr. Tanga Odoi had many NRM MPS pick forms expressing interest including ministers resigning their ministerial positions to run for the speakership position.
The CEC of the NRM has however endorsed the Deputy Speaker Anita Among as their flag bearer for the speakership race, NRM secretary General Todwong Richard confirmed.
The NRM enjoys a comfortable number of majority membership in the house which gives high hope that Among will probably be the next speaker.
Ahead of the speakership election which is scheduled for Friday 25th, the NRM party gathered for a party caucus this morning.
It goes without saying that the detained MPS Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya too expressed their interest in speakership. Ssewanyana for speaker and Ssegirinya for deputy speaker incase position is declared vacant.
