The International Criminal Court of Justice (ICJ) which is the UN top court has ordered Uganda to pay damages to DR. Congo for the war between 1998-2003 on Congolese soil which according to ICJ is evidence of Uganda’s breach of it’s international obligations.
Along legal battle between Uganda and Congo has been ongoing for the devastating conflict that left thousands of people dead between 1998-2003. In 2005, the Hague based court ruled that Uganda pay the reparations which were never paid.
During this war, many crimes were committed like, plundering of natural resources like; gold, diamonds by the UPDF, loss of lives, other damages to persons like; rape, displacement and recruitment of child soldiers.
On Wednesday, the ICJ again ordered Uganda to pay Congo for the damages caused over a war that begun in the late 1990s. A sum that the general public would agree is light against Congo’s demands.
