The president of Senegal, Macky Sall who previously indicated he will stand again for presidency has put an end to many months of speculation and questioning when he announced he will not run again.

The 61 year old West African nation’s president has been in office for two terms having been elected first in 2012 when he defeated Abdoulaye Wade. After serving 7 years in his first term, Macky was re-elected into office in 2019.

“My decision is not to be a candidate in the 2024 presidential elections, even though the constitution allows me to run, Senegal exceeds my person and is full of leaders who can manage it”, president Macky Sall.

It is said that on Sunday,  Sonko – widely seen as the biggest opponent to the Republic Party called for protests if Sall were to decide to run.

“Come out to confront the Macky Sall regime and say that it is not up to him to choose the candidates that will face each other in the next presidential election”, Sonko said.

President Macky Sall has also served in many political positions including as; Prime minister under president Wade’s regime(2004-2007), President of the National Assembly (2007-2008), Mayor of Futick, a city he was born in, twice (2002-2008, 2009-2012).

He was for a long time a member of the Senegalese Democratic Party (SDP). After major struggles with the then president -Abdoulaye Wade, Macky formed his own party, Alliance for The Republic(APR).

It will be remembered that president Macky Sall is the first Senegalese president born after the country’s independence from France.
